The majority of siding options will stand the test of time for more than ten years. If your siding is made from vinyl or wood you could get fifty to a hundred years of life out of it. But in the majority of cases you will find that your siding may wear down before its expected lifespan. This may be due to unexpected and extreme weather or can be due to environmental issues that were not predicted for your area. There is also the potential that a particular part of your siding may be damaged which may require you to replace just a section of the siding and not the entire house.

How to Tell if your Siding Needs Replacing

You don’t have to worry too much because it is not as difficult as it seems to have your siding replaced. The easiest way to know if your siding needs replacing is if you are thinking that it may be time to replace it. If you are thinking that way then you should do some investigation of your siding to see if your thoughts have any ground. Here are a couple tips for helping you decipher if your siding is damaged enough to necessitate replacement.

  • From the front of your house go as far as 20 – 30 feet away and look for visual signs of damage to your siding. If you can see damage to your siding from that distance then you obviously need to replace it.
  • Up close you should look for signs of mildew, dry rot and mold. There is no way you can find a way to repair siding with these problems and so they will need to be replaced. If you are not quick with replacing pieces of siding with these problems you will find that the problems may start to affect other planks and then you will end up having to replace more than a couple planks which will be more costly.
  • When examining your siding you want to look for deep cracks, dents, holes and scratches. This is especially important if you have vinyl or aluminum siding as these are more susceptible to these types of damages. If you find that approximately 50% of your siding has such damage you may want to just go ahead and do a complete replacement.
  • You will need to test the flexibility of your siding if it is made from vinyl. If you find it bending easily, falling off frequently or simply not staying connected to the other parts of the siding then you know you have to replace your siding.
  • Standing alongside your home look down at your siding. If you see wavy parts or warped parts then this means your siding is suffering from water damage and needs to be replaced.
  • Look at the seams and check if they are pulling away from your home or if they are loose. If this is the case you could be getting rainfall in between the siding panels and your home and this could cause damage to your siding as well as to your house.
  • Have your energy, cooling or heating bills gone up in recent times? Maybe your siding is not keeping out enough outside air and keeping in your inside air. As such you may benefit doubly from replacing your siding with energy efficient siding.
  • Lastly if you think your siding is no longer beautiful and you want a change in the look of your house, you could need to replace your siding.

Bear in mind that even if only some panels in your siding need replaced you may still need to replace the entire thing or risk ending up with a home with mismatched siding. You may find that if you have to replace pieces of siding that you may not be able to find the matching style, color or brand. This will present the challenge of you having to replace your entire siding if you don’t want your house to look mismatched.
